Weird but Effective Ways to Keep Burglars Out of Your Home

Spring Break is quickly approaching. Can you imagine coming home to an open front door, a ransacked house, and missing valuables? You locked your doors and turned on your home security system, so how did they get in?

Michele Harmon Team has a few weird, but effective tips to help you keep burglars out of your home!

  1. Put Ladders Away

Burglars love ladders! Ladders make it easy to reach a second-story window, and oftentimes, upper story openings are not wired to home security systems. If you want to prevent burglaries, consider storing your ladder in the attic or a locked garage. You may also want to consider calling your security company to ask them to wire upper-story windows into your alarm system.

  1. Tweak your Landscaping

When it comes to outdoor landscaping, we often think about maintenance and curb appeal, however, your landscaping can make an impact on your home’s security. Burglars like to target homes that can be entered and exited without detection. We have a few simple tweaks that can help make your property less appealing to potential intruders.

Increase visibility from the street:

A privacy hedge is great for keeping out nosy neighbors, but keep in mind, it can also welcome thieves! Trim back bushes and trees near windows and doors. Make sure the entry points to your home are easily visible from the street.

Be strategic about bushes and gravel placement

Some hedges can act as a robber deterrent! Placing thorny rose bushes or sharp-leaved holly beneath your first-story windows offers beauty and protection!

  1. Be careful with mirror placement

Believe it or not, burglars can be smart and sneaky! Do you have a mirror in your entry hall? Be sure it does not show your alarm system in its reflection. Burglars can use the mirror to see if your alarm system is armed! Make sure your alarm system isn’t visible if someone peers through a window.
